Shohei Ohtani is a Japanese professional baseball player who currently plays for the Los Angeles Angels. He made history in 2018 as the first player in MLB to be both a pitcher and a hitter in the same season since Babe Ruth did it in 1918. Here are some fun facts about this unique player:

• Ohtani was born in 1994 in Iwate Prefecture, Japan. He started playing baseball when he was just three years old.
• As a teenager, Ohtani attended Hanamaki Higashi High School, where he quickly established himself as one of Japan’s top young players. In 2012, he led his team to the National High School Baseball Championship.
• After high school, Ohtani was drafted by the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league. He made his professional debut with the team in 2013 and quickly became one of its most important players.
• In 2017, Ohtani announced that he would be leaving Japan to pursue a career in Major League Baseball. He signed with the Angels in December of that year.
• Ohtani made his MLB debut in 2018 and immediately made an impact both as a pitcher and a hitter. He finished the season with a .285 batting average and 10 home runs, while also going 4-2 as a pitcher with a 3.31 ERA.
• In 2019, Ohtani underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire season.
