1. Ron Guidry – or “Gator” as he was affectionately known by his fans – was one of the greatest New York Yankees pitchers of all time.
2. He was born in Lafayette, Louisiana on August 28th 1950 and received his education at St. Thomas More High School before signing for the Yankees organization in 1971.
3. He made his debut with the Yankees two years later on April 12th 1974 and quickly established himself as a force to be reckoned with posting five shutouts from June-September that same year.
4. In 1975 while pitching against Boston Red Sox, he had an unprecedented game – striking out 18 batters over nine innings – becoming only the fourth pitcher in history to accomplish this feat (in addition to Bob Feller, Steven Carlton and Nolan Ryan).
5. Meanwhile, during 1978 season Guidry led the AL’s best record (100-63) while leading the majors in wins (25-3), ERA (1.74) and 8 shutouts; this culminated with him winning AL Cy Young Award due to most dominant single season performance by any pitcher since Walter Johnson’s 1913 season when he went 36-7 with 1.14 ERA & 11 Shutouts for Washington Senators
6. This impressive streak continued throughout his career as he won two World Series rings (77/78) alongside three All Star appearances and four Gold Glove awards; including setting MLB record for consecutive strikeouts from July 4th 1983–April 1985 (46 straight strikeouts).
7. His last pitch – ever so fittingly – ended up being a strikeout of Baltimore Orioles Cal Ripken Jr which cemented his legacy as baseball’s great left hander once and for all; ultimately leading him to being inducted into Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown, NY entering its hallowed gates on July 28th 2008 after receiving 79% of votes from writers across the nation.
