Yount was born on September 16, 1955, in Danville, Illinois. He started playing baseball at a young age and was scouted by the Milwaukee Brewers as a teenager.

In 1982, Yount had an outstanding season with the Milwaukee Brewers. He won the American League MVP award after hitting .331 with 29 home runs and 114 RBIs. He won the award again in 1989 after hitting .318 with 21 home runs and 103 RBIs.

Yount played both shortstop and center field during his career with the Milwaukee Brewers. He won Gold Glove awards at both positions and was known for his defensive skills.
