Maury Wills was a professional baseball player who played primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers during his career. He was known for his incredible speed and base-stealing ability, earning him the title of “The Stolen Base King.” Here are some fun facts about this legendary player:

• Wills was born in 1932 in Washington, D.C. He grew up playing baseball and basketball and signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers as an amateur free agent in 1951.
• In 1960, Wills became the Dodgers’ starting shortstop and quickly established himself as one of the best base runners in the game. He led the National League in stolen bases for six consecutive seasons from 1960 to 1965.
• In addition to his success on the base paths, Wills was also a solid defensive player. He won two Gold Glove awards during his career and helped lead the Dodgers to three National League pennants and two World Series championships.
• Wills set several records during his career, including stealing a then-record 104 bases in 1962. He also holds the record for most stolen bases by a shortstop with 586.
• After retiring from baseball in 1972, Wills worked as a coach for several teams including the Seattle Mariners and Pittsburgh Pirates. He is currently retired but remains involved in baseball through various charitable causes.
• In addition to his contributions to baseball, Wills is also known for being an advocate for civil rights. He participated in several protests during the Civil Rights Movement and has been recognized for his efforts to promote equality both on and off the field.
