  2. He played for the Atlanta Braves from 1988 to 1999 and then again from 2001 to 2008, with a brief stint with the Boston Red Sox in 2009.
  3. Smoltz was known for his versatility as a pitcher, having spent time as both a starter and a closer during his career.
  4. He was named an All-Star eight times and won the National League Cy Young award in 1996 after posting a record of 24-8 with a 2.94 ERA.
  5. In addition to his success on the mound, Smoltz was also an accomplished golfer and even attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open in 2010.
  6. After retiring from baseball in 2009, Smoltz has worked as an analyst for MLB Network and Fox Sports. He has also served as a commentator for various golf tournaments including The Masters and the U.S. Open Championship.
