• Valenzuela was born in 1960 in Etchohuaquila, Sonora, Mexico. He grew up playing baseball and soccer and began pitching professionally at age 17.
• In 1981, Valenzuela made his debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers and quickly became a sensation. He won both the National League Rookie of the Year award and Cy Young Award that year, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same season.

• Valenzuela also had success off the field as well. He recorded several albums of Mexican music and appeared in numerous commercials for companies such as Pepsi and Ford.
